In what can only be described as a landmark study involving plastic surgeons, it was recently revealed that over 85% of all facelift procedures now involve fat transfer.

Why is fat such a hot commodity? Read on to learn more.

Repositioning Versus Transferring Fat

In a facelift procedure, repositioning of the existing facial fat is a very common practice. In fact, in the study mentioned above, repositioning was a standard part of the facelifts performed by these surgeons.

Repositioning involves taking fat from one area of the face and positioning it to another place in order to achieve a more youthful look. Often times, patients will bring in a picture of themselves at a younger age, perhaps ten or fifteen years prior.

The plastic surgeon will then attempt to recreate the youthful features of the person’s face when the fat was positioned in places where youth is associated.

Similarly, when additional fat is needed to create volume, and there is no more fat available in the face, plastic surgeons can use liposuction to remove a small amount of fat from the tummy or thighs and transfer it to the face.

Fat transfer involves removal of liquefied fat, processing to remove impurities, and then injecting fat into specific areas of the face to achieve the look the patient wants.

In fact, in the study, it was discovered that more than 70% of the surgeons started using fat transfer in the last ten years while about 50% started doing so in the last five years.

Fat Transfer to Other Body Areas

Transferring fat to the breasts and buttocks has quickly grown as one of the most popular procedures today. Its appeal is three-fold:

  1. Liposuction is used, which can reshape other areas of the body such as the belly, hips, and thighs.
  2. Nothing foreign is used, so allergic reactions and rejection by the body is not a concern.
  3. Recovery times are minimal due to the lack of large incisions as are used in other procedures such as buttock implants and breast augmentation with implants.
